A Print Inspired by Community

Did you know that we also design our own textiles?

In an effort to directly support African artisans and preserve traditional techniques (like batik), we’ve experimented with different colors and popular symbols to create fabrics.

Our ‘Attention’ print is our first signature design and it means a lot to us. We took inspiration from the Adinkra symbol “Akoben,” which symbolizes alertness and readiness to serve a good cause.

We recreated the symbol using geometric lines, which represent discipline in traditional batik making. Artisans from Ghanaian brand @clause.handmade hand-carved the stamp for us, based on our drawings.

First, the cotton fabric is dyed an accent color. After that, our design is stamped onto the cotton fabric using wax. The wax creates the design on the fabric because it resists additional layers of color.

See the final colors below.

This fabric represents our attention to all things that threaten our potential as a people. We believe that education and unity is the key in preventing further exploitation regarding our social, economic, physical, and mental well-being.
